Someone has to be the first.
Someone has to take the first bite
Of the cherry
Be the first cab off the rank.
Someone has to be the early bird
For worms to be taken.
Some has to drop the rock in the pool
To set the ripples going.
Someone has to throw the first stone
For the stoning to begin.
Great work here! I loved the concept and the way you delivered it! You’ve got my follow. Check out my comedy blog and give it a follow if you like it!

Hi John, I like the final line, very powerful. It goes against the others with its negative association. I immediately saw the last scene of Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” when I read it. If you don’t know her short story, it’s worth reading. Hope you have a great week. π

thanks Eden, I have read her short story a number of times; it had an influence on this piece; I am impressed that you’ve been trawling through the archive: I thought only I did that π

Nice! That’s one of my favourite shorts. There is a movie on Youtube as well. The quality is not great, but it’s an accurate retelling of the story.
I’m curious to see the difference in a person’s writing over time, so trawling is a good thing!
Have a great day. Going to sleep now π΄

May I just be the first to say, itβs nice to find someone else whose not afraid to be the first at something, even though, now that I think if it, that often ends badly, but surely but for us. π

I was thinking of the iconic story ‘The Lottery’ when I wrote this poem, and also Helen Garner’s blistering non-fiction book, ‘The First Stone’ and also what Jesus said ….

Well, the latter definitely went first when he ascended into heaven, am I right? π Love, Climo, havenβt read the nonfiction book, but Iβll add it to my list.

A big splash even; luckily he was without sin, so not breaking any of his own strictures.

The early bird gets the worm.
But the second mouse gets the cheese.
