Some people say I should write
More about people
Social issues
Than, say, red pencil sharpeners
Or cats with no eyes
But I reckon you’ve got to run
With what you’ve got,
Whatever grabs the eyeballs
Of yr brain,
the sad, empty chairs of the Nail Salon, for instance,
plushed as if for royalty,
the little commas at the end of sentences wriggling
like tadpoles,
that lop-sided moon like a broken smile,
Whatever,
You’re there to celebrate its otherness,
How it shines out in a tawdry world,
What brings it, and you,
In the words of Trent Reznor,
‘Closer to God’
Nice!

thanks; I’ve had four or five goes at it over the last fortnight; a bit long, maybe, but I can’t take anything out 🙂

ah i know that feeling. one of my uni lecturers called it “killing your darlings”. it breaks the heart. but i didn’t feel this poem was too long.

I like the tadpole-comma imagery!

interseting you picked that: I was just about to change it to ‘the little commas wriggling BETWEEN sentences like tadpoles’

Hmm. Yes, I think I like the ‘between’ version!

I often think I should introduce more tadpoles into my ramblings… 😉👍

I love this poem! We have enough writings about social issues and people – we need more nail salons, tadpoles, and cats please!! 🙂

I love this collection of images especially the nail salon chairs. All the small details we miss

I actually did a post on September 30th this year called ‘The Sad, Sad Chairs’ ; I thought it time I reprised them 🙂

writing should come from author’s heart not on demand or request!
