I came across a stricken Xmas beetle on my walk along the lake.
Somehow it had toppled over and was swivelling on its back like a break dancer, its little legs paddling the air.
Ants swarmed over it,
I grabbed a leaf and flipped the beetle over.
Ants leapt off, a black sizzle of anger..
I flipped it a few more times till all the ants had let go, then I stood back and as it rose into the air. the sun glinting off its sheeny wings, it looked back and seemed to give a little wave.

Gorgeous. I like the black sizzle of anger. I don’t think I have seen any Christmas beetles this year. Strange.

it is very strange: I hope they are not becoming endangered; they are such gorgeous beetles π

Bet it felt good saving a little creature like that, and creating a great poem to boot. I’d never heard of a Christmas beetle? (other than John Lennon!)

LOL π I think they are native to Australia like kookaburras and Kangaroos and Aussie Rules footy π

hope you can make it π Australia is almost virus free, as you know; I think part of the reason is our low population density ;;

Yep. Fingers crossed. We were originally going in April for his 40th but have now postponed until Christmas 2021. π

well, we’ll see what Aussie icons we can muster up for you: your visit will coincide with the coming of the Christmas beetles then you can write some Aussie influenced poems and post them to your blog: they should be a revelation and a joy to all your readers π

They always do that,. Christmas beetles. Fall over on their backs, that is. I think they may have a very short lifespan, from something I read.

You even rescue insects in need. Coleoptera chivalry isn’t dead nor this bizarre beetle. Is that a real photo? π
