Not a tower of giraffes
Nor a bloat of hippopotami
But a petulance of poets
Gathered in a side room
Of the library
Each champing at the bit
Wishing the bore out the front
Would bugger off and let someone
Worthy get on
Not really listening
But when their turn comes,
Oh the words, the words,
Such melody, such sweetness,
Was ever anything β¦.
Barely noticing that many who had already read
Had buggered off home or hit the bar.
I have heard Stand-Up Comics are much like this.
It is no laughing matter.

Excellent poem. You made me chuckle again. Come to think of the phrase βwe have two ears but only one mouth. Should we not then listen twice as much as we talk.β

that is a very sobering thought, Ulle; I can’t think of anything witty to say; I’ll pass it over to the panel; anyone?

it is the humor, Bob, that sustains many of my poems: the refusal to take life too po-faced π

Good! Slyly backhanded. We are more interested in receiving accolades ourselves than in giving to others. The bore out front has needs, too; and they may have labored long and hard on their composition. Nevertheless… if the poem is the thing… and it is does not strike a chord or two or three… what’s to be done?

Oh, and hey! This one struck several chords, John. In truth. Rhythm, atmosphere, tone, imagery, descriptiveness, word choices, message, identity,……cotton and thorns…. draw us in, and give the little jab…

Petulance of poets is perfect. Would settle for a fresh peck of poets would be divine. Freshly picked just like this poem. Great fun, John.
