What it’s Like

You wanna know what it’s like? He says.

I’ll tell you what it’s like.

It’s like walking around with a ‘Vacant’ sign around your neck.

Like being scooped out by an excavator.

Or being a songbird without a voice.

It’s like walking along a jetty studded with couples clinging to each other like barnacles on pylons.

It’s like being on the esplanade ripping into a pulled pork burger like an animal ‘coz you’re on yr own so it isn’t all bad.

That’s what it’s like.

  1. I get some Bukowski vibes here (I liken most poems that I like on WordPress to Bukowski because I’ve only ever ready his poetry, and Plath’s, and the reason why I was drawn to this post is because I liked it in the first place), and I like your use of the language. Keep going!

  2. Yep vacancy feels pretty much like all that. I loved this one in particular line the most John; It’s like walking along a jetty studded with couples clinging to each other like barnacles on pylons.

  3. You are a bit of an optimist, John.
    Personally, I think Western culture
has been on a downhill slide since
1979 … to be precise. I say that as
    an unpaid free-range anthropologist.
    My incontrovertible proof …
is Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus
    not enough?! 😎

    • I understand, David: please don’t write me off but I love Justin Bieber’s ‘ Why Don’t You Love Yourself’ by Ed Sheeran and Miley cyrus’s ‘Nothing Breaks Like a Heart’ with Mark Ronson; there are some bright lights 🙂

  4. My first reading was just for the words,
My second reading was for the meaning, the social redeeming value.
My third reading was for the words again.
I like the way you craft with words.
I like the couples on the jetty and the pulled pork.
