I am not Chernobyl.
Not Three Mile Island.
I am not about to have a meltdown.
That steam coming out of my ears? That?
Just me letting some of the pressure out.
That growl?
Don’t worry. It’s worse than its bite.
That string of expletives I’m about to utter?
Just my inner Tourette’s airing its dirty laundry.
. A meltdowm? Nah. Now what is it you’ve been trying to tell me?

once my fizz is out, i’m ready to listen…

It’s weird to think that it’s (very basically) a bunch of rods in a pond. A bunch of irritations in a brain I guess.

yes, I think the comparisons hold; we don’t want too many meltdowns 🙂

Ooh, makes me think about what accident I am. Thank goodness you’re not this one as that ground it still contaminated.

🙂 really? after all this time? my infrequent meltdowns fortunately do not have such lasting effects — though one never knows —

Might be my angers
‘s a bit like the Peshtigo Fire; rages in control most of the time, until a strong wind escalates it without warning.

well put; I don’t know that reference: will look it up 🙂

read up on the Peshtigo fire; in Wisconsin, right? did you live anywhere near that State or is the fire as well known in the States as the Granville Rail Disaster of 1977 is known here ?

Well, I don’t know how well known it is overall, but it happened the same day as the famous fire in Chicago, so there’s lots of theories why this day was a firestorm overall. I remember learning about it in history classes, and how it was overlooked.

Next time I feel I am going to lose my temper, I’ll recite this poem. A little humor goes a long way.

I spent a year near Three Mile Island several years after the accident. All i could think about is the word —accident. Powerful and scary.

thanks Mark; thankfully we don’t hear of such accidents any more —

This works well because (a) you choose an original comparison and (b) it’s the detail which makes it work. I like the nice, easy style as well.

you know, I an, it’s the same qualities I appreciate in your work; I like my poems approximate the rhythms of speech —

Haven’t you heard? The statistical probability for a meltdown is almost non existing. So Chernobyl, TMI and Fukushima probably didn’t happen and we probably nerver loose our temper!

SItting on top of the reactor, we feel the buildup of pressure, wait for the right moment — and get BLOWN INTO SPACE.

wow! I’ve never experienced a moment like that —

Sometimes I think a meltdown is necessary. Though tantrums are discouraged for kids, and certainly frowned upon for adults, we should have them more often. Relieves the pressure, as you say. 😀

We would be better off for it ; perhaps there’d be fewer homicides and road rage incidents if people could find legitimate means to ‘depressurize’ —

Meltdowns can be scary in the case of those with power plants for brains. Gotta be wary of those people… 😉

I think letting off steam can be good for the one doing it but not so great for others. Haha! Nice one, John. 🙂
