I have always wanted to work in a pencil factory
like Henry David Thoreau.
I could draw inspiration from my work each day,
pencil in appointments with imaginary friends
during coffee breaks or smokos.
Do they still have smokos by the way?
‘The pen is mightier than the sword’ but what about
the pencil? & which one?
2B or not 2B? Hamlet famously dithered just after
he had asked Ophelia [ in an earlier draft of the play ]
to come and look at his etchings and she had refused.
I may not be the sharpest pencil in the box but I still
want to make my mark upon the world.
You make excellent points, John, and I dare say are one of the sharpest wits I know. Love this, I have no idea about smokos or what they are, but I’m imagining a cigarette and something marshmallowy at the same time. What a delightful poem to ‘lead ‘ off the rest of my day.

lie you, K, I’m posting a poem from a few years back because few of my current readers have read it — and because it’s National Pencil Day. Yay !!

It is. Oh man, I’ve got a lot of make-up thanks to give out. Must have seen a dozen pencils through my day classes, and one night class yet to teach. I will be sure to sing the praises of the pencil this evening, thanks to you.

Loved the last two lines…
“ I may not be the sharpest pencil in the box
but I still want to make my mark upon the world.”
Wonderful John!

thanks — and they are my lines unlike the 2B reference that came from a gag I heard on the radio: a pilfered pun 🙂

Like a Shakespearean tragedy
the villainous erasure is ever
the noble pencil’s arch enemy ⚔️

yes, it is a good one; few poems from the archive still shine after being locked away, but this one does —
