My parents partied to Mario Lanza.
His records littered the credenza
before ending up on the turntable.
[ it was the era of Clark Gable].
and everyone would their glasses clink
when Mario sang ‘Drink Drink Drink’
He had a big voice and big loves,
and the habits of a tiger cub,
‘impossible’, it was said, to housebreak.
He died too young at thirty eight.
Way way back in ’59.
Then along came Elvis. He was mine !

we certainly do, Beth; have chosen to rename this post to make it more strange, elusive and less populist in honor of the word that generated the post: ‘credenza’, which I had to look up 🙂

good call. we had that piece of furniture at our house and my parents used that word for it )

I had to look the word up but that was what mum and dad put their 78’s on before putting them on the turntable , and ‘Lanza’ rhymed with ‘credenza’ so it made sense; you can still buy them now, normally called ‘consoles’ —

Mario Lanza, eh? I’ll have to give him a listen. Love the nostalgic vibe, John.

if you do, ‘The Drinking Song’ is one of his most famous songs and one I got off to, before Elvis came along 🙂

I should have added if I were teaching poetry writing I would give an exercise based on this and a few other poems: create a poem from an article of furniture — and see what students come up with 🙂

A good idea. Challenge accepted. I am writing down my assignment, but may not get to it till later this week. 😉

a ‘flirty floor lamp’: this seems most promising: a ‘saucy’ ditty may well come from that 🙂

thanks K: it all began with a word, hence my renaming of the post to honor the prompt 🙂

I’ve got three or four lined up, all trying to jostle their way to the front; we’ll see who gets there first 🙂

Fabulous music poem John! I love the lyricism and rhyme. 😀

thanks, Eden: ‘The Drinking Song’ was the last ‘big’ song ’till Elvis hit the scene — from the film ‘The Student Prince’, a bright, rousing technicolour musical 🙂

They went away too early. The curse of fame and good music…

I have a good memory — and an appreciation of good music, though I still like Elvis 🙂
