You could have knocked me over with an albatross
when I heard that four off-kilter waltzes I was listening to
were by Samuel Coleridge Taylor. Hang on, I thought,
my favourite Romantic poet [ sorry Wordsworth] whom
I studied at Uni, who wrote one of the great lyric narratives
of all time, ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’ was also
a classical composer? How did this just become known?
Did he moonlight as a musician, did he snuggle up
to the great composers of his time? But then the announcer,
as if reading my mind, clarified that the composer was
Samual Coleridge Taylor whom his mother named after
the great poet. After I calmed my farm, I settled back
and listened to more of Samuel C.

Yes, I should have asked whether people knew the composer; apparently he is coming into prominence again: he has an interesting backstory involving mixed races

The confusion is understandable
An early example of the modern
phenomenon where so many
artists, musicians, baristas, even
shop clerks and accountants, are
named ‘Dylan’.
I blame their hippy parents 😎

It’s far better to be unique,
rather than common, John 😎👍

🙂 that’s a very good answer, David; are you familiar with the works of Samuel C-T?

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor?
Apart from providing a soundtrack
for Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s
‘The Song of Hiawatha’, not much.

nor had I but I was listening to Classic FM and they were featuring Samuel C; he was quite prolific; you don’t need to read it on Wiki but he has an impressive discography; he was of mixed race and it seems his time has come;

He may even get to tour down under 😎

Lol; if only he didn’t die all those years ago 🙂 but others can feature his work e.g the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra; watch this space 🙂

thanks Bob; it’s quite a story; and if you’re looking for something classical you haven’t heard before, you could do worse than give old Samuel C a listen 🙂

Never heard of this composer, So, does he live up to his name? Though ‘off kilter waltzes’ don’t sound hopeful.

listening now to his most admired work, the 12 minute overture to ‘Hiawatha’s Feast’ which cemented his fame; his music is quite a find, though I’m really an afficionado of pop and rock —

Ironic and quite a revelation. Names are deceptive. 🙂

Taylor Coleridge is certainly in the limelight now as a black composer. Everyone’s time comes sooner or later, so mum used to tell us 🙂
