Greedy Gubbins.
I want to get up.
I want to see how much my eyes
have swollen,
want to see Kokki dash across the court
in his tiger shorts after his prey,
want to see those arum lilies again
trumpet their hosannas to orange,
want another pod coffee
another shot of Bailey’s
just a thimble full
but my partner sees me passing by.
You should rest your eyes, she says and I say,
too much to see,
and I know what sheโs about to say
even before she says it:
my mummy would have called you,
a Greedy Gubbins, sheโll say
and then she says it,
Ouch!
Ouch, indeed

it’s an old English saying, older that us, Beth; I’d never heard it before —

I had to look up Gubbins. But I get it, there’s so much to see. And maybe we are a little greedy in wanting to see it all.

we’re writers, Bob; that’s how we live in this world ; others may not see it this way —

I agree. You got to take it all in.

thanks Bob ; suspect it apples to artists in all fields: they are ‘driven’ people —

It’s so hard to rest. Better listen though…who would want to be a called a Greedy Gubbins!

I wear it as a badge of pride, Bridgette ๐

You don’t need your sight when you have your intuition. I didn’t grow up with that saying, but I think I’ll revive it with my own children here in Virginia. Love the bold colors clashed with the blindness, John.

thanks K; it’s a bit late now but I hope the Kokki reference didn’t fall flat, referring to watching Kokkinakis playing Murray in the Aussie Open; I don’t know if many people got that; you gotta be careful of sporting references —

You’ve reminded me that I should watch some of the Australian Open. I’d almost forgotten that it’s taking place. It’s a great tournament.

there was that epic match between Kokkinakis and Murray that went on for almost 6 hours !! which didn’t end to 4.05 a.m —

This is lovely, John. I really love the descriptions of the things you miss seeing. And the Greedy Gubbins thing is new to me but it makes me smile.

thank you so much, Worms. The Greedy Gubbins reference made me smile too; it was said in a stern disapproving way but I could see its comic potential ๐

ha ha ha. I can’t even imagine Greedy Gubbins being said in a stern disapproving way. That’s like an angry “coochy coo”. ๐คฃ

Sounds like the name of a naughty teddy bear. You’ll bounce back in no time, John. But it’s so normal to be missing what we often take for granted. ๐

love that: ‘naughty teddy bear’ captures the tone perfectly ๐

I struggled to translate gubbins until I realized it’s the same in old Swedish with the modern version gubbe. If you have the patience it’s good to close your eyes and just listen. Then your imagination will run wild.

thanks Ulle: I didn’t know the phrase may exist in languages other than English —
