We are sitting across from each other
trying not to stare
looking down at our phones.
There are some paintings on the wall
but no one is looking at them.
Perhaps they are the sort of paintings
that are not meant to be looked at
but are there to establish a presence,
maintain a mood.
Then I notice the paintings,
half figurative, half abstract
in faded denim blue
with black, springy squiggles
like a cat’s whiskers
are not signed.
Perhaps the painter was half abstracted
when he painted them
& simply forgot.
could well have been. good observation

hahah; I got up close and personal and, yep, no signature on any of the paintings; either the artist is mighty modest or forgetful π

I can believe it. I forget to sign my poems sometimes. π

yes, but a painting is a much more substantial work: though some poets might dispute that:)

Yes, Ovid and Dante being two that spring to mind. π€£ Some painters are speed racers, but I think there is blood in both works. A book of poetry more on par, perhaps.

yes, a book certainly; speaking of which, isn’t it time …..

Right. I know, but it feels like it’s a mess, John. I can’t even look at it right now. I think I put so much time into it, and then to think it’s not good enough or needs more. At least when you get that news about short stories or a poem you don’t feel like so much time has been wasted. π (throwing confetti for my own personal pity party) π

no, you’re much better than that; find yourself an editor, someone local, preferably, though these days …. I would ay you have enough for a collection, a chapbook perhaps for starters: worms did one and i’ve done a few

Thank you. I probably do. There are journals sticking out all around this place. It’s like a poem mausoleum in my house. The novel…it feels like a birthed this sick child, and I’m waiting to see if it will die or go on and live (this sounds so terrible, doesn’t it?)

a novel is a big undertaking; I tried writing one in my late teens till poetry found me; novel take their time; don’t get too anxious — but when the occasion or inspiration presents itself go for it π

Yes. Good advice, John. Summer is when I have my golden hours to write. I’m not sure what this summer’s focus will be yet, but it’s those precious days of warm weather, no classrooms to clutter up my thoughts, and a time to chase my own butterflies.

hahaha; those butterflies of the mind:) before you go out check the net is in top condition π

Hate to say, I looked again at your photo incase I could see it hidden haha. A little like a Graeme Base book, but looking for the artists signature.

I remember Graeme Base’s books, esp ‘Animalia’ ; they were a delight, looking for hidden items ; my kids loved them too π

The art on walls is so important to the waiting watcher. It should never be unsigned!

yes, I can’t understand it either; perhaps it was by an amateur who thought so little of their work they didn’t bother to sign it?

Close inspection of the photo, provided, leads me to believe that perhaps the black, springy squiggles are the artists mark. He/She uses a different pseudonym for each piece, changing it each time to complement the composition.

that could be: the artist’s mark rather than a signature; a bit like the mark of Zorro π

Did someone add the “cat whiskers”? Maybe too much time in the waiting room?

hahaha; that’s a clever thought π

Hopefully some kid, bored in the waiting room, decided to do some art.

Haha! That’s a good one, John. And I find myself staring at the walls and what’s on them rather than being glued to my phone. I know I’m the odd one out. Weird. π

Truly a poem drawn from blood and finally the painting got the attention it deserved and longed for. Not like when a visited the ‘Give blood buss’, it was a bloody mess.

hahaha; you got it, Ulle; the painter would have been pleased had they seen me paying rapt attention π
