Quilt.
Lynne is weaving a quilt
based on a pattern
in the happy cancer ward.
Do you ever deviate from it?
The pattern? I ask.
Rarely, she says.
If I do things can go horribly wrong
but sometimes, she says with a tinkle
in her voice,
they can go wondrously right.

Best of luck and good wishes to Lynn – lovely colours

if shes’ there next time I’ll add more info; she brightened up the world — and isn’t it so like poetry: if you deviate from the pattern you’ve devised then things can go …..

Quilting is an artwork that so intrigues and attracts me.

me too, Worms; but I’m not handy with my hands: never attracted to carpentry or metalwork; how about you? all I can do is hold a pen and punch a keyboard — some poets, likeour own Barbara Hanrahan could quilt, paint and write —

Sewing needles and pins and the like, they are not my friends unfortunately. I am a klutz in their presence. Perhaps it is nervous awe. I have tried sewing but feel like a total foreigner there… languageless and odd footed.

you must write a poem on this, Worms; I love the self deprecating was yuo say it: ‘Klutz’ is magnificent 🙂

A little deviation can be a whole new picture or story. Always take a chance. Wish her and you the best. 🙂

A little deviation can bring a lot of joy sometimes. I understand Lynne though… certain disciplines (like quilting) may require adhering to rules. 😀

spot on, Eden: deviation requires boldness and strength, qualities in short supply under a chemo regime —

that’s so kind of you, Eden; thanks; I don’t know how Array’s name got attached to your comment; but it was late and I was drifting off 😦

Interesting thoughts around the potentials of deviation. The lightness of the poem weighed with the anxious realities of the “happy” cancer ward also make me pause. You’ve captured a lovely person and moment in Lynne, and balanced it well with felt and unspoken realities. A fine poem about the human spirit. Be well John!

thanks so much; yes, the concept of deviation fascinates me; it is the point where original and edgy art takes off —

It’s true new patterns are only ever formed from breaking old ones. Your brevity is heart-warming, John.
