Like an Animal.
I hear it like the sea
from four or five streets away
faint, soft
like a cuddly toy
but when I sit outside
in the car port
where the barbecue is
it smashes into me
like an olfactory wave
a phantosmia of
chops, Frenched lamb cutlets
sizzling on the grill
and me, grabbing them by the hands
ripping into them
tearing the meat off like an animal —
& I know then
my appetite is back.
yes!

A grand turning point for you! Olfactory wave…love that expression, so visual.

thank you; I was pleased with that and the use of ‘phantosmia’; I like weaving ‘new words’ into a text —

Yes, a difficult word to slip into a poem, but it fitted seamlessly!

Eden’ it’s not as bad as the loss of sight or hearing would be, but the prolonged loss of appetite is really disconcerting —

I totally understand, especially if food is a pleasure. It’s so good you got your appetite back — an indication that things are returning to normal. xo

it came with such suddenness, Bob; luckily that night at my daughters we binged on classic T-Bones π

Great to hear your appetite is back. It’s always good, and a bit scary, to connect with that inner wolf.

The gnawing hunger. The images really work well and the cross-over has that epic turn you do better than anyone else.

I smell like I sound, I’m lost and I’m found
And I’m hungry like the wolf
Thanks for the poem
