I have always wanted to work in a pencil factory
like Henry David Thoreau.
I could draw inspiration from my work each day,
pencil in appointments with imaginary friends
during coffee breaks or smokos.
Do they still have smokos by the way?
‘The pen is mightier than the sword’ but what about
the pencil? & which one?
2B or not 2B? Hamlet famously dithered just after
he had asked Ophelia [ in an earlier draft of the play ]
to come and look at his etchings and she had refused.
I may not be the sharpest pencil in the box but I still
want to make my mark upon the world.
* can you think of other lines for this poem?
* have you ever written an object poem? The opening lines are so important; would you like to share a few lines — or the whole poem — with us here?

I can’t think of any more lines, John, it’s an excellent poem!
I love the Hamlet reference, clever!

thanks, Carolyn. I’m very proud of this poem. Maybe there’s more lines in it … but it’s pretty good as it is :),

what actually prompted it was an article on Thoreau in which it said that he worked in a pencil factory!! well, that did it for me: i was off and running 🙂

thanks Matthew ; the whole poem was a joy to write:the prompt was a fact unknown to me that Thoreau both before and after ‘Walden’ worked in a pencil factory 🙂

I had a job in the pencil factory
but I was sacked for swinging the lead
it didn’t help that pencils use graphite
the foreman was definitely dead
