Those rocks deflect you
from the red-backs
in your mind that crawled off your brush
onto the canvas that morning:
those Ned Kelly heads
staring at me
from the foot of the quarry:
you looking at me, I say.
You looking at me?
Iβm the only one here.
Then I come and get you
and those stolid blocks of stone
with eye slits
wallop your imagination.
the ones youβre committing
to canvas so people can stare at them from the walls
of a gallery.
These do look like heads – I see them in armor ready to fight

Intriguing! I love the interaction with the rocks and with the artwork. And I love the Ned Kelly image. Perfect. And Redbacks are such sinister enemies, aren’t they?

π I like what Eden wrote , Worms: I could have used that metaphor: would have made the poem more topical ; and , yes, redbacks are sinister π

Dark image you painted with your words. I too love the reference to Ned Kelly notorious killer, redback spiders and sinister looking rock formations.

I could not believe those eye-slit rocks: they were way down in the old quarry, accessible mainly by foot: glad I made the effort π

They look like riot police, ready to attack the citizenry. Scary.
Good one, John.

that is brilliant , Eden:you saw something topical, whereas I saw something historic and iconic, at least to Aussies π

thanks Hobbo: did you realize I was using the famous quote by Travis Bickle, De Niro’s character, from ‘Taxi Driver’? I fear it may have fallen on deaf ears π¦
